An Addition That Expands Living While Preserving What Matters
The Harmony Church Residence reimagines a long-held family home into a multi-generational living environment—one that allows independence and support to exist side by side.
At the center of the project is a simple but meaningful shift. The existing one-story home remains, becoming an accessory dwelling unit for the grandmother—preserving her independence while keeping her closely connected to daily family life. A new addition wraps alongside it, forming the primary residence for her granddaughter and four children, creating a shared property that supports both autonomy and togetherness.
The design responds carefully to both family dynamics and architectural context. The addition introduces a two-story volume that balances the long, horizontal presence of the existing home. Rather than competing, the new structure works in dialogue—wrapping the side of the original house to create a cohesive composition across the site.
Inside, the home is organized for real life. A gourmet kitchen with eat-in dining anchors daily activity, while generous living spaces, a bonus room, and a three-car garage support the rhythm of a growing family. Circulation between the two homes is intentional, allowing for connection without sacrificing privacy.
Rooted in the traditional architecture of Hamilton, Virginia, the exterior draws from familiar forms and proportions, ensuring the addition feels at home in its surroundings. The interior, however, introduces a more contemporary layer—bringing clarity, warmth, and functionality to the way the family lives today.
The result is not just an addition, but a reinvestment in a family home—one that evolves to support multiple generations while holding onto the character and memories already built into the place.
