A Virginia pool house and outdoor living design built for daily use—not just weekends.
Designed for a private residence in Virginia, the Clifton Poolhaus reconsiders what a backyard structure can be—setting a higher standard for pool house design and outdoor living. The brief was simple in theory: create a structure that operates as a true extension of the home, not just an accessory.
Guided by the client’s preference for natural stone and metal, the design establishes a clear anchor within the landscape. It frames views, organizes movement across the site, and supports multiple modes of use—from quiet retreat to a fully independent guest suite. A compact indoor kitchen connects directly to the exterior grill station through a pass-through garage window, reinforcing a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor living.
In front, the pool trades symmetry for composition. Boulders anchor the edges and shape the experience. A climb leads to the elevated spa, where a controlled waterfall returns water to the main pool—simple, deliberate, and just enough.
